Oct 11, 2005 Aluminum TIG welds faster than any other material, IMO. Once the weldment is up to temp stabilized, you can really rock roll. Spoolgun MIG is faster, and it doesnt look bad. Diamond-plate of .100 and thicker is easy. Just got a job to TIG some aluminum, diamond-plate diesel tanks.

Pork, People weld aluminum diamond plate all the time. But for someone with very little experience, it would be one big pain in the ass. Welding Aluminum aint that hard once you learn, but learning takes a while. from what you have said, i would not try it.,..unless you can get someone to jump start you by showing you what to do for about an hour.

Certainly a welder for home hobby use will need to run on the electrical power you have available at home 120 volt or if you can get a suitable power point put in, run 220 volts.. Certainly youll have an easier time with a more powerful MIG welder run on 220 volts.

Sep 05, 2006 The galvanized I used is inexpensive looks OK. Aluminum tread plate would look awesome but is really pricey, about $6/sq ft in the .100 thickness, or around $4/sq ft in .063. For a really cool look with outstanding durability, consider SS sheet. It is quite a bit higher priced than aluminum tread plate, but would require zero maintenance. 18 GA.

Jun 27, 2008 Welding diamond plate. 06-27-2008, 06:36 PM. I have a Hobart 140. I am having trouble getting my metal to stick to the bottom side of the diamond plate. I have the amperage set on 4 and using a wire speed of 40 to 70. The plate is 1/8 and trying to stick 1/8 supports to it using solid wire. Anyone got any hints?
For welding 5083, which has higher strength, 5556 or 5183 are recommended. 5356 does not quite match the strength of 5083. 4043 should not be used to weld 5XXX alloys, except for 5052, which has a low Magnesium content. For joining a 5XXX sheet or plate to a 6XXX extrusion alloy, such as 6061-T6, the recommended filler alloys are 5356 or 5554.

Apr 10, 2016 A friend of mine is wanting to build a few boxes out of 3/16-1/4 thick aluminum, and I am afraid its too thick for my Lincoln Square Wave 175 TIG machine. My other options are an Invertec V-250s DC TIG, or a Power MIG 255...not too sure on DC Tig welding on aluminum, so it looks like the 255 may be my best bet. Only problem is, I cant justify spending $6-700+
